Canker Worm Infestation
Unfortunately, this seems to be the year for the canker worm/tent caterpillars which is a major concern for various tree populations. As far as pesitcide control is concerned, homeowners can use products containing Bt.k.(Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki), sold under various trade names, on their own trees & on Town-owned trees. Bt.k. affects only worms & is non-toxic to other insects, birds, animals & humans. The worms eat the product, stop feeding in 2-3 hours & die in a few days. The Town is not responsible for private trees.
Only use pesticides that are specific to the problem, sold in small amounts, ready to use and apply the product only to the location where there is an infestation (spot treat)... Always follow label directions for proper application.
Homeowners can also hire commercial tree sprayers to spray privately owned trees in their yard. Commercial sprayers must possess a Pesticide Applicators License approved by the Town of Herbert to spray any Town owned trees & can only use Bt.k.
Fire Pits
It's fire pit season again. Thank you to all of the residents who've come to the office to obtain fire pit permits for our 2013 season. For those of you not aware of our policy, a fire pit permit is required for fire safety reasons. There is no fee charged for a permit, but the Herbert Fire Chief does inspect the proposed designated fire pit area to make sure it meets fire regulations according to Fire Pit Policy 2010-03. Permits are not typically renewed annually unless the previous fire pit location changes. All new fire pits require a permit.

Water Meter Readings
We'd like to reiterate the importance of submitting ACTUAL WATER METER READINGS on a regular basis. Every three months a Water Meter Card accompanies your water bill. It is advised that you take the time to read your water meter & submit it to the town office. Many call, fax or even email us. We'll be happy to record your six digit reading without you having to leave your house. These readings enable us to monitor actual water usage & can alleviate a lot of frustration & questions regarding your water bills.
Skunk Sightings
Please check your property for signs of habitation & let the town know. Dog/cat food should not be left out if at all possible.
Proper Garbage Disposal
Due to the town being over-run by skunks, we do advise residents to discourage unwanted visitors by placing garbage bags in properly lidded bins. Bylaw 91-5 states 'Garbage being accumulated and stored for the purpose of being collected and taken to the waste disposal ground shall be kept in covered, fly-proof and water-tight containers.' Please help us alleviate some of the problem by ensuring your garbage is properly disposed of.

House Numbers - Would you be easily located in an Emergency?
Police officers, firefighters, EMR, and other emergency personnel, who respond to 911 calls, say visible house numbers to identify homes can mean the difference between life and death. Protect your family and property by making sure the address on your home is clearly visible from the street!
